Jan Rambousek

Painter, graphic artist

  • Born 1896 in Prague, died 1976
  • Studied at Prague Fine Arts Academy and Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris
  • In 1923 established and was an editor of graphic arts publication Hollar
  • From 1923 – 1929 served as a professor of graphic arts in Prague Fine Arts Academy
  • In 1954 wrote a dictionary of graphic arts which became “a bible of graphic arts “.

Rambousek’s art proves his competence in wide range of media but especially in graphics. His emphasis were on creating art with social motives, capturing everyday life on streets of Prague, average people, workers. His later lithographs, however, show his progress towards simplification and abstraction. His contribution to the graphic art movement is enormous. Thanks to his efforts, the Czech graphic arts expanded from being used in book illustrations to journalism, and to gallery exhibitions. Rambousek travelled and exhibited in Europe, especially in France. His works are in private and public collections and museums around the world.
